Merrill has done an excellent job providing tremendous insight into Old Testament history. He provide meticulous footnotes from many sources providing the very latest data and research on biblical themes. His respect for the biblical text is refreshingly evident throughout the book. Those who believe in the verbal inspiration and inerrancy of Scripture will find this book a delightful addition to their libraries!

This work is comparable to Edersheim's "Old Testament Bible History". It is perhaps not quite as exhaustive but I would rank it as more readable. If you have difficulty tracking the events in the old testament, for instance, you cannot quite get the timeline down since part of the story is one book and another part in another book and you get confused over it, get this book. A book like this will seem unneeded by the untrained eye. Most would say that if you have the Bible you do not need this book which is just a retelling of the same information. WRONG! This book (and others like it) provide a coherent story of the events in the Old Testament. They allow you to examine the issues associated with problem passages and to see archeological evidence at times related to each passage. You will gain a much deeper systematic understanding of Old Testament history. Buy this book even if you are a seasoned Christian who knows all the stories. You will have a great resource which allows you to put each event in sequence and perspective. This book is organized wonderfully. It includes clear maps and give biblical references to each and every event being discussed. I have already checked out the section about Saul and when he became king. Merrill treats the subject with mastery. He also gives answers to common objections and textual criticisms. This is truly a work worth your time and effort. Especially if you love history.

Well researched and biographically detailed, Merrill has written an excellent historical account of early Israel, the priest-nation. Certain theological and traditionally held views guide Merrill that will appeal to both the serious Biblical student and minister alike. Extensive scripture and subject indexes make this book an excellent research tool. A must have for most Christian faiths. It will make a wonderful addition to any organization's reference library. This is a very readable text. I read it in just a few days like a well written novel. The very accessible style fosters a big picture understanding of the flow of Israelite history that sets all the Sunday school lessons into their proper context. Also the bibliographical apparatus is more than strong enough to direct and support in- depth research at many levels. I wish this text had been available 35 years ago.
